Meet Zahabu
Her name is African, Southern Ethiopian to be exact, and means "The Golden One"
Our oldest daughter Liz named her and I think it fits her perfectly.
Nicknames: Zabby and Boo
Zabby is a Golden Retriever/Lab mix. A family whose daughter plays soccer with Hana have a Golden who was visited by a neighborhood Romeo Lab and ended up with a surprise litter of -many- puppies! One of the girls from this family brought a couple of their puppies to one of the soccer games... and Chloe saw them. Immediately she said, "Oh...I need to get one of these puppies for my brothers"! Hmmm my first thought was.....this girl is either very thoughtful....or very smart! As a Mom I was so touched that she was thinking of her brothers...that's about all I could think of. What a sweet child I was raising, I thought. But reality sunk in and I remembered that this child is way beyond her years, mentally, and so I think that she knew that if she was asking for a puppy for her brothers, it was more likely that Mom and Dad would say yes. Not to mention that she called her Daddy on the phone and asked him if she could get one for her "boys"......she knows that her Dad has a really hard time saying no to her!
This family was actually giving the dogs away. It's pretty hard to turn down the offer when you have 6 kids looking at you with those sad eyes. So we caved and added Zabby to our big crazy family....including 2 other dogs, a cat, a Blue & Gold Macaw, 2 gerbils, many bunnies, many chickens, 3 ducks and 3 goats!
One of the dogs we owned, we brought home from a Kmart parking lot! Her "birth family" was standing by their car giving away her and all of her brothers and sisters from an old cardboard box. It was just before Christmas so we named her Christmas--Christy for short--and always referred to her as our Kmart dog. She is gone now, sadly, but she lived to be 13 years old and was the best dog ever. In some ways Zabby reminds me of Christy so I'm hoping she will end up being a priceless member of the family like Christy was.
Hope you all had a great weekend....
Wendy
